Youth Program

Youth Sailing Classes offer a unique opportunity for young sailors ages 7 to 13 to experience our local waterways and discover the magic of sailing.

The goal of our youth sailing program at the OCC School of Sailing & Seamanship is to inspire and educate the next generation of sailors and give them the confidence and the skills they need to safely sail a small boat while also instilling a love of the ocean and the marine environment.

Learning to sail requires students to be physically active but sailing also involves learning difficult concepts as students put the pieces together to be able to rig and safely sail the boat.  While on the water students learn to anticipate next steps and solve problems each day.  Students learn in different ways and some students quickly learn the practical side of sailing while the theory takes some time. For other students the theory is easy while the mechanical or physical part of sailing the boat is challenging.  Our goal is for all students to be successful and have fun while learning, so we will carefully consider several factors each day before sending sailors on the water including age, height, weight, prior experience, personal interest, weather conditions and traffic on the bay.

Sailing is a great teacher of life skills and students will learn to work as part of a team, problem-solve, cause and effect, science and technology, and much more along the way.  Our certified sailing instructors will help young sailors build skills, gain confidence and self-esteem while having fun and enjoying the outdoors.

Classes are offered for beginning through more advanced levels allowing young sailors to find a class to fit their experience and interest level.
